The SBL has eighteen (18) Sector Committees, specifically established to cover existing and new areas of commercial law, with a view to enhancing commercial law practice among Nigerian lawyers and Law firms.

Arbitration & Alternative Disputes Resolution (ADR)

SYNOPSIS OF THE ARBITRATION & ADR COMMITTEE

The Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee is concerned with providing a forum for education, shared expertise, professional development and networking opportunities for practitioners and academics in the field of Arbitration and ADR. To this end, the Committee provides educational programs and materials for the improvement and learning of practitioners and academics in all ADR procedures.

 

The Committee also aims to contribute to the enhancement of Arbitration and ADR practice in Nigeria, and to draw attention to problems in law, which impede the effective use of these processes. This Committee is chaired by Mrs. Obosa Akpata.

Aviation Committee

SYNOPSIS OF THE AVIATION COMMITTEE

The Aviation Committee of the NBA-SBL is saddled with the responsibility to advance the practice of aviation law in Nigeria via the Section.

It’s core objectives includes sensitizing young lawyers on the practice and procedure of aviation law in Nigeria, engaging with respective members of the aviation committee of the Senate and House of Representatives and all relevant regulatory agencies on issues of aviation law and policy. The Committee is chaired by Mr. Ajibola Dalley.

Capital Markets

SYNOPSIS OF THE CAPITAL MARKET

The Capital Markets Committee (the “Committee”) was established under the auspices of the NBA SBL. The Committee aims at promoting intellectual and professional development in the areas of capital markets, engaging key stakeholders in the industry towards stimulating awareness on topical issues in the capital market sphere as well as promoting international standards within the Nigerian capital markets.

 

The Committee also seeks to increase knowledge and promote best practices in the law and practice of its focus area among legal practitioners including lawyers in training. In this regard, the Committee hosts an annual Knowledge Impact Series (the “Series”) at The Nigerian Law School. The Series is aimed at providing an avenue for capacity building for students of the Nigerian Law School. Through such initiatives, the students are exposed to a practical perspective of the Nigerian and International Capital Markets. During the Series, students are given the opportunity to learn from and engage with seasoned capital market experts from top tier law firms in Nigeria. The Committee is chaired by Mr. Kalu Abosi.

SYNOPSIS OF THE AVIATION COMMITTEE

Employment, Labour & Industrial Relations

SYNOPSIS OF THE EMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The Employment & Industrial Relations Committee of the NBA-SBL is a forum for lawyers to deliberate on pertinent legal issues affecting employment and industrial relations in Nigeria. The Committee continues to spearhead vital discussions on the employment relationship amongst employers/employees, trade unions, lawyers, human resource practitioners, and regulators of labour in Nigeria through its meetings and stakeholders’ forum.

The core objectives of the Committee are to deepen the capacity of lawyers (in-house, external, in government employment and in the academia) and other stakeholders in employment and industrial relations laws and practice and to positively influence legislation and policies in this ever-evolving area of law.

In recent times the Committee has become increasingly instrumental to the development of labour and employment law and practises in Nigeria. The Committee is a veritable source of information for lawyers and other stakeholders on recent legal developments in the industry including the rulings of the National Industrial Court and the thinking of its Judges. It has also been instrumental to the clamour by stakeholders for the review of extant labour laws through its constant interaction with the National Industrial Court as well as the Joint Committee on Labour and Productivity of the National Assembly.

The Committee continues to collaborate with the Training Committee of the SBL and other partners to provide continuous legal education and to build the capacity of lawyers and Human Resource Practitioners. This Committee is chaired by Mr. Anthony Nwaochei.

Energy, Natural Resources & Environment

SYNOPSIS OF THE ENERGY COMMITTEE

The Energy, Natural Resources and Environment Committee NBA-SBL is charged with the mandate to cover the energy, natural resources and environment sectors of legal practice. It has been established to become the leading forum for discussion, learning and policy within the identified sectors. The Committee is a meeting place where lawyers can contribute to the analysis of relevant issues affecting the sector within Nigeria, as well as globally, with the aim of elevating the standard of the industry practice to its apex.

Through the SBL, the Committee upholds the continuing legal education mandate of the Nigerian Bar Association by organizing training sessions, talks, studies and publications. It also intends to encourage participation in the deliberation, drafting and enactment of legislation and policy pertaining to the energy, natural resources and environment sectors of legal practice, where appropriate. The overarching objective of the Committee is to encourage the delivery of qualitative legal services to the public. The Committee is chaired by Mrs. Felicia Kemi Segun.

Law Practice Management

SYNOPSIS OF LAW PRACTICE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Law Firm Practice Management Committee of the NBA-SBL provides lawyers and law firms with practical tools required to enhance their practice, their business development skills and their management capabilities. Beyond opening a law firm, there are basic practices one needs to be acquainted with to enable them properly run their firm and this is part of what the Committee would basically be involved with.

It also provides a platform for lawyers to network and support each other and also create awareness of regulator and other issues that may affect the practice of law. This Committee is chaired by Mr. Anire Kanyi.

Maritime

THE MARITIME COMMITTEE SYNOPSIS

The Maritime Committee of the NBA-SBL has the mandate of advancing the interests of legal practitioners engaged in the Nigerian Maritime industry through the promotion of innovative policy development in relation to the existing legal and institutional framework in the maritime sector.

To achieve its mandate, the activities of the Maritime Committee are dedicated to undertaking programmes, seminars and workshops that are designed to offer maritime legal practitioners consistent education and enlightenment in respect of developing and contemporary legal maritime issues from a local and international perspective. This approach ensures that maritime legal practitioners are well-positioned and informed to provide qualitative legal services to the Nigerian and international maritime sector. The Committee is chaired by Mrs. Funke Agbor.

Mergers and Acquisition (M&A)

THE MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS’ COMMITTEE SYNOPSIS

The Mergers, Acquisitions and Corporate Reorganisations Committee aims to be the foremost hub for the exchange of ideas, industry know-how and networking of corporate, corporate restructuring, private equity and M&A practitioners in Nigeria. We also aspire to be the epicenter of legal development in M & A practice and procedure for upcoming practitioners.

The Committee’s mandate is to develop core areas of interest within M&A and Corporate Reorganisation law and practice, and to achieve this objective, the Committee aims to create several Working Groups from amongst our members to enable us pursue our goal of networking and continuing legal development in M & A and Corporate Reorganisation law and practice through three main initiatives:

  • continue the legal development initiatives, by organizing seminars and training programmes to develop M & A capacity in the legal profession;
  • identify areas in which we can strengthen the rules and regulations underpinning M&A and corporate reorganization practice and procedure and work with other stakeholders to achieve greater understanding, certainty and efficiency in the rules governing the practice; and
  • well the rank of our members by sensitizing law firms, corporate organizations, regulators and independent practitioners to the benefits of joining our Committee and being active members thereof.

The Committee will foster more interaction amongst its members by having regular meetings and events, and well as encouraging dissemination of ideas by all Committee members through newsletters and driving the aims and objectives of the Working Groups. This Committee is chaired by Mrs. Olayemi Anyanechi.

Taxation

SYNOPSIS OF THE TAXATION COMMITTEE

The Taxation Committee is one of the Committees’ of the NBA-SBL comprised of seasoned legal practitioners with a bias for tax law, practice and policy. The Committee provides good opportunity for lawyers to network among themselves on tax matters and seeks to increase basic understanding of, and communication about, tax issues in Nigeria.

The Committee is responsible for raising the standard of tax law practice in Nigeria through capacity building for its members, constant engagement with government agencies on tax legislation and issues. The Committee also provides its members and the public with access to relevant and up to date information on key areas relating to the practice of tax law. The Committee is chaired by Mr. Olaleye Adebiyi.

Young Lawyer’s Forum

YOUNG LAWYERS’ COMMITTEE SYNOPSIS

The Young Lawyers’ Committee is one of the Committees of the NBA-SBL which facilitates the professional development of Nigerian Commercial Lawyers with the aim of raising the standard of business law practice in Nigeria.

The Committee oversees activities geared towards providing young lawyers with education, social activities, networking opportunities and ensures active representation for young lawyers in the Nigeria Bar Association under the umbrella of the Section on Business Law. Most importantly, the Committee provides leadership opportunities to members who might not otherwise have access to such opportunities, while providing new and innovative programs that benefit young lawyers relatively new to the Nigerian legal practice.

The Committee is chaired by Ms. Bukola Olabiyi.
